Base made its debut on the backpacking scene in 2002 with the launch of three hostels in Auckland, Rotorua and Wellington. Base merged with ACB Group Holdings Ltd known locally as Beyond Backpackers Beyond in 2006. In December 2007, Base, purchased Brisbane's popular and well known inner city hostels, Palace Central and Palace Embassy, in addition to the iconic "The Down Under Bar", backpacker bar.
Base now operates in major gateway sites including Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Christchurch with a total of 8 backpacker hostels in NZ and 15 in Australia.
